    Camellia Oil - Tsubaki abura

    Made in Japan (Isu Islands)

    Ingredient: 100% Tsubaki Oil

    Size: M > 70 mL / L > 118 mL

This oil has been produced on the island of Toshima (Isu Shoto), off Tokyo, for more than a century. It is used by many Japanese wood workers as well as specialists in ancient blade (shinken) who are looking for a more stable oil than the Choji oil.

Treatment with Camellia oil is recommended by the craftsmen who make our wooden weapons. The regular oiling is necessary for unvarnished weapons. It is recommended also for the maintenance of Iaito and Shinken.

    Utilization on wooden weapons:
Once every 2 months in the wet season, 2 times per month during dry season. For a better preservation of your weapons, it is advisable to carefully rub them with a dry cloth after each use. When you apply the oil, clean the wood surface by rubbing vigorously with a dry cloth, then apply the oil in a thin layer directly with the hand. Allow to dry.
If your weapons are not painted it will not be necessary to sand, but if they are, sanding will help the wood to absorb more oil.

Note that this Camelia oil is initialy intended for skin and hair care. We've selected this oil for it's unmatched quality: 100% pure camelia oil, no additive, cold pressed, cosmetic grade, almost odorless, and halal certified.

    • Jiki Shinkage Ryu (Naginata Yo) Bokken - Red/White Oak/Isu no Ki

      Made in Japan (Kyushu)

Flat Spine | Flat butt | Small Kissaki

Red Oak, White Oak and Isu no Ki available

This Jiki Shinkage Ryu Bokken is made from a single piece of oak (red or white) from the southern islands of Kyushu (Japan). This Bokken is for practitioners of the "Kashima Shinden Jiki Shinkage" school. However, it is also appreciated by many teachers of different Aikido styles, as for example the late master Tamura. This thin and light Bokken is valued by Aikido practitioners working on finesse and precision. The almost inexistent curvature allows to practise in a very direct manner. Anyhow, because of the mentioned particularities, this Bokken is rather to be understood as a complement in addition to a standard Bokken.

Please note: This type differs from the thicker "Jiki Shinkage Hojo Bokken", designed for heavy contact Bokken against Bokken practise and for Suburi.

      • Choice of wood species: red oak, white oak or Isu no Ki.
      • Available finish: Urethane varnish or camellia oil polish.
      • Manufacturing workshop: Horinouchi for red and white, Aramaki for Isu no Ki.

Non varnished - Oil polish option:

All our high-end are available either varnished with urethane or polished with camellia oil although they are much more pleasant to the touch as well as use with the latter.
Unvarnished weapons are more ecologically-friendly, but they requires regular (monthly) maintenance with oil (camellia or wood maintenance oil) and they can only be made from the finest woods of Japanese quality. Given the need for maintenance of these weapons, our stocks are limited. Also, since the craftsmen must select the best wood possible to manufacture these weapons, the processing time is longer than for varnished weapons. If out of stock or made to order, the shipping time can take up to 6 weeks in case of shortage. Please note that the oil finish process can darken the wood significantly.

      About Jiki Shinkage Ryu Naginata:

The Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage Ryu evolved from the Shinkage Ryu and the Kage Ryu, which both have disappeared. Its beginnings are situated in the 16th century and attributed to Matsumoto Bizen No Kami Naokatsu.
But the Naginata version is much more recent. Developed in the late 19th century by Satake Yoshinori, a former Jiki Shinkage Ryu student and his whife Satake Shigeo. An emphasis is placed on preserving the Kata in its original form and leaves very little room for improvisation. This art was rapidly introduced into girl's schools, which explains why most practitioners are, still today, women. Jiki Shinkage Ryu Naginata became famous after the victory of several well-known teachers over Kendo practitioners, but the school does no longer focus on competition.
