Jiki Shinkage Ryu (Naginata Yo) Bokken - Red/White Oak/Isu no Ki

    Made in Japan (Kyushu)

Flat Spine | Flat butt | Small Kissaki

Red Oak, White Oak and Isu no Ki available

This Jiki Shinkage Ryu Bokken is made from a single piece of oak (red or white) from the southern islands of Kyushu (Japan). This Bokken is for practitioners of the "Kashima Shinden Jiki Shinkage" school. However, it is also appreciated by many teachers of different Aikido styles, as for example the late master Tamura. This thin and light Bokken is valued by Aikido practitioners working on finesse and precision. The almost inexistent curvature allows to practise in a very direct manner. Anyhow, because of the mentioned particularities, this Bokken is rather to be understood as a complement in addition to a standard Bokken.

Please note: This type differs from the thicker "Jiki Shinkage Hojo Bokken", designed for heavy contact Bokken against Bokken practise and for Suburi.

    • Choice of wood species: red oak, white oak or Isu no Ki.
    • Available finish: Urethane varnish or camellia oil polish.
    • Manufacturing workshop: Horinouchi for red and white, Aramaki for Isu no Ki.

Non varnished - Oil polish option (+ 600 JPY):

All our high-end are available either varnished with urethane or polished with camellia oil although they are much more pleasant to the touch as well as use with the latter.
Unvarnished weapons are more ecologically-friendly, but they requires regular (monthly) maintenance with oil (camellia or wood maintenance oil) and they can only be made from the finest woods of Japanese quality. Given the need for maintenance of these weapons, our stocks are limited. Also, since the craftsmen must select the best wood possible to manufacture these weapons, the processing time is longer than for varnished weapons. If out of stock or made to order, the shipping time can take up to 6 weeks in case of shortage. Please note that the oil finish process can darken the wood significantly.

    About Jiki Shinkage Ryu :

The "Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage Ryu" evolved from the Shinkage Ryu and the Kage Ryu, which both have disappeared. Its beginnings are situated in the 16th century and attributed to Matsumoto Bizen No Kami Naokatsu. This school had its apogee at the end of the Edo period and it is one of the major techniques (with the Onoha Itto Ryo) studied by the founder of the Daito Ryu Aikijutsu, Sokaku Takeda. In this school, the focus is on the coordination of breathing and technique for which the used furibo (suburito) can weigh up to 50 kg. A large amount of Naginata (halberd) techniques are taught as well. The Bokken presented here is designed for practice against Naginata, which explains its very lightweight an absence of curvature for very fast and quick moves against such long weapon.
