  • Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Edo Branch Bokken - White Oak

    Made in Japan (Kyushu)

Flat Spine | Flat butt | Beveled kissaki

    White Oak available

This Bokken is made from a single piece of white oak from the southern islands of Kyushu (Japan). Although this model is intended for practitioners of the Edo (Tokyo) branch of the famous Kenjutsu school "Yagyu Shinkage Ryu", it is very pleasant to handle and quite popular among aikidoka. A light curvature, a long tsuka and a weight slightly inferior to the classic bokken, these are the characteristics of this special model. Its balance is shifted towards the kissaki.
A possible link claimed by certain historians between the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, and the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu, popularized this model, in a research context for the practice with weapons in Aikido.

This product is also available in the "Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Edo Branch Daisho - Bokken & Shoto Set"

    • Choice of wood species: white oak
    • Available finish: Standard Finish or Seido Special Finish.
    • Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki

    Finish options:

In 2021, with concerns for the workers, all workshops greatly reduced the number of urethane-varnished weapons and replaced the finish with a "Candle Wax". Seido is now transitioning to a new finish offer for the majority of its weapons.

Standard Finish: At Seido, we complete the workshop finish with Camelia oil treatment by default. This is the standard Seido finish.
We do not apply any additional polishing for this finish, so some weapons might have a slightly rough surface.
For maintenance, we recommend that you oil your weapons about once a month with a vegetal-based oil.

Seido Special Finish: For this special Finish, we first apply a Camelia oil polish (oiling and sanding the weapons with oiled sandpaper), then we finish the weapon with high-quality beeswax. This finish makes the wood as smooth as it can be and guarantees excellent protection for several months.
For maintenance, we recommend at least to oil your weapons every month or so. You can also apply wax a few hours after oiling your weapons (if some oil remains on the wood, remove it with a piece of cloth or tissue).

    About Yagyu Shinkage Ryu :

The school of Kenjutsu "Yagyu Shinkage" was founded by Yagyu Muneyoshi Sekihusaï and his son Yagyu Munenori at the end of the 16th century and is the result of knowledge of the clan Yagyu, as well as the "Shinkage Ryu" of Kamiizumi from which Muneyoshi received the teachings after having lost a duel against him. Promptly adopted by the shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa, the school "Yagyu Shinkage" became and still is in our days one of the most famous and popular schools of Kenjutsu in Japan. The school is currently run by Yagyu Toshinobu, 22nd Soke.
The term "Yagyu Ryu" refers to the many styles created by various members of the Yagyu family, having a common origin. Not to be mistaken for the "Yagyu Shingan Ryu", tough linked historically to the Yagyu family yet, very different from the school of "Yagyu Shinkage" or "Yagyu Ryu", which is also remarkably different as indicated by the specifications of the much lighter bokken used.
Currently, "Yagyu Shinkage Ryu" usually refers to the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Edo Branch, and "Yagyu Ryu" refers to the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Owari Branch.
Certain historians claim, (without going into further details) that the founder of Aikido Morihei Ueshiba had trained or at least carefully observed the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu.

    Such an elegant bokken!

I was looking for a light bokken to practice precision in my techniques and complement the heavier bokken I got for developing strength. I chose this in red oak to get it as light as possible. It's so beautiful. It feels smooth and refined when practicing, but still strong because of the dense wood; the shape is superb. A lovely piece of craftsmanship!

Merci Seido.
