Shodo - Unique Pieces of Japanese Budo Calligraphy Art

Average rating: 5/5 - 5 customer reviews

In this section, you will find unique Japanese calligraphy pieces related to martial art practice. We have decided to offer you those unique artistic pieces to help you build the Kamiza of your Dojo (honor wall). Pictures of Budo founders and Japanese arts have been constantly requested from customers for years, and we are now happy to offer the work of Master Koreian.
At the moment, we offer the following words and expressions: Aikido, Ai (love), Ki (energy), Do (the way), Takemusu Aiki, and Seishin Itto (Unity of mind / Mental concentration). More may follow depending on your interest in those products.

Traditionally, calligraphy (as well as other kinds of paintings and arts) are presented on a "Kakejiku" (also called Kakemono). The cylinder at the bottom, called Jikugi, is the center of the rolled scroll. The end knobs are called Jiku, and are used as grasps when rolling and unrolling the scroll. This explains the translation of "Kakejiku", "Hanged Jiku".
Kakejiku are artistic compositions and two of the main styles are called Maruhyoso (the "whole/complete mounting") and Sandanhyoso (the 3 stages mounting). We offer different versions of those two mounts for each calligraphy available below.

- Maruhyoso is divided in 4 sections: the top section called "Ten" (Heaven in English), the bottom section called Chi (Earth in English), and the two pillars on the right and left sides supporting the Heaven. Because Kakejimu were observed from a Seiza position that provided perspective, the Heaven part is longer than the Earth part, for balance.

- Sandanhyoso Futai Tsuki: Divided the same way as Maryuhyoso, it differentiates by the "Ichimonji" at both top and bottom of the calligraphy itself. Ichimonji simply means "straight line" and usually refers to a straight line of a traditional pattern. The Ichimonji part is made of a different fabric. The "Futai", or tassels (two pieces of fabric hanged at the top) are made from the same fabric/pattern as the Ichimonji.

All our calligraphies are made by Master Koreian Saiun (虹嶺庵彩雲), as he goes by his Shodo master name. Master Koreian started calligraphy in his childhood, before entering the priesthood at the age of 17 years old. He won several prizes and often does solo exhibits. As a true Shodo master, he also teaches within the official Japanese Shodo association.
Calligraphy being piece of art, real pictures of the actual product are displayed on each product page. Via the "Calligraphy model" option, you will select the exact piece that will be shipped to you.
