Jiki Shinkage Ryu (Naginata Yo) Bokken - Sunuke / Tsubaki

    Made in Japan (Kyushu)

Flat Spine | Rounded butt | Small Kissaki

    Sunuke or Camellia (Tsubaki) available

The Bokken Jiki Shinkage Naginata Yo (thin) is manufactured from a single piece of wood: Sunuke or Tsubaki. Designed for the school Kashima Shinden Jiki Shinkage to practice techniques Bokken against Naginata (halberd), this model is also used in certain Aikido schools, mentioning especially the late master Tamura, or Leo Tamaki in France. Also the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, seemed to have used a similar Bokken to this one (thin and almost without curvature).

Please note that there are two distinct Bokken used in this school, a lightweight model, presented here to practice against Naginata, and a heavy Bokken for the practice against Bokken. Both, the model made from Sunuke and the model made from Tsubaki are exclusively manufactured by the Aramaki workshop.

Concerning the Tsubaki model: Named "Biwa" in the catalogue of the artisan, some stores sell it in error as a Bokken made from loquat. However, the artisan confirms that to date, there is no shop in the world offering this model in "Hon Biwa" (real loquat) on a regular basis.

    • Choice of wood species: Sunuke or Camellia
    • Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki's Workshop for all models

Non varnished - Oil polish Finish

All our high-end bokken are offered non varnished (camellia oil polish finish). Note that unvarnished weapons are much more pleasant to the touch as well as usage. Unvarnished weapons are more ecologically-friendly, but they requires regular (monthly) maintenance with oil (camellia or wood maintenance oil) and they can only be made from the finest, Japanese quality woods. Given the need for maintenance of these weapons, our stocks are limited. Also, since the craftsmen must select the best wood possible to manufacture these weapons, the processing time is longer than for varnished weapons. If engraved, out of stock, or made to order, the shipping time can take up to 6 weeks in case of shortage.

    About Jiki Shinkage Ryu :

The school of Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage has its roots in the Shinkage Ryu and the Kage Ryu, which both have disappeared. Its beginnings are dating back to the 16th century and are ascribed to Matsumoto Bizen No Kami Naokatsu. The Jiki Shinkage Ryu had its apogee at the end of the Edo period: With the Onoha Itto Ryo it is one of the major techniques studied also by the founder of the Daito Ryu Aikijutsu, Sokaku Takeda. Using Furibo (Subrito) with a weight of up to 50 kg, the Jiki Shinkage Ryu concentrates on methods to coordinate breathing and technique. Further, a large amount of Naginata (halberd) techniques are studied as well. The Bokken presented here is designed for the practice against Naginata, a long weapon against which a very lightweight and almost straight Bokken, allowing quick moves, is best.
