From 4 workshops in 2019, the wooden weapon industry in Japan is now reduced to one workshop at full capacity and one workshop with reduced capacity. Stock shortage are more and more common, so please make sure to check the availability displayed above the add to cart button upon options selection. Feel free to read our blog article for more information on the situation.

Weapon Engraving Services

Available fonts (style) 4 Japanese fonts, 3 English fonts
Depth The stronger the laser, the deeper the engraving. Superficial is quite discreet, standard is deep enough to stand forever, deep can go up to 1 mm depth and creates a burning effect within the engraving.
Free transcriptions You can write your name in English and select a "Japanese" font, in which case we will take care of the transcription. Note that several translations exist for the same name and that we cannot accept claims. (Please use the text field to add a comment if the pronunciation is unusual. If you already have a translation, please attach a picture). We do not translate expressions or initials, only names or words. Requests for expressions translations will be ignored and refunded. Please also note that initials cannot be translated into Japanese. Consequently, they will always be engraved in English.
Number of engravings You can order a maximum of 3 engravings per weapon from this page. The modules N1, N2, and N3 correspond to the engravings Number 1, number 2, and number 3. These modules are identical and you can add them in the order you wish. Of course, we cannot engrave twice in the same place, so please pay attention to the chosen positions.
For more than 3 engravings, please contact us prior to placing your order.
Limitations We engrave in Japanese and English only (no Chinese, Korean, etc.) For any special request (logo/design), contact us prior to your order. (Undiscussed demands will be ignored).

    Standard Plastic Tsuba

    Material: PVC
Tsubadome (rubber ring) optional (white or brown).
    Size: ~7.8 cm x ~6 mm

Basic brown plastic tsuba, a guard that will protect your hands during full contact practice, which is fixed on your bokken with a rubber ring.
This plastic Tsuba is the only made in Japan plastic Tsuba designed for classic Bokken on the market and only exists in brown color.

It will fit on all standard and high-end bokken, with or without groove, and on chuto (short bokken) and shoto (wakizashi), but might require a little filing depending on the exact shape of the blade (particularly at the mine).
Please make sure you select the correct size as the hole is slightly smaller for Shoto size. The M (Chuto) size can still be recut for a Bokken, but a Bokken Tsuba will be too large for a Chuto.

Rigid Leather Tsuba for Bokken and Shoto

    Material: cow leather
Tsubadome (rubber ring) optional (white or brown).
    Size: ~7.6 cm x ~7 mm

Thick leather Tsuba, very solid. A little smaller than its sister product, the round leather Tsuba. Because leather is a "living" material, each Tsuba is unique, specially in its color. The emphasis is not placed on its appearance but this kind of Tsuba is an excellent model to effectively protect your hands!

The M (Shoto/Chuto) size can still be recut for a Bokken, but a Bokken Tsuba will be too large for a Shoto.
In addition, note that this Tsuba cannot be fitted on a thin Bokken (Yagyu, Yagyu Shinkage, Niten Ichi Ryu, etc.)

Please note that the Tsuba is shipped in its original shape. If you would like the Tsuba to be fitted with a particular weapon in your order, please specify it via the comment box of the shopping cart page. We will only fit the Tsuba on Standard and Deluxe models, not on Koryu Bokken.

    Camellia Oil - Tsubaki abura

    Made in Japan (Isu Islands)

    Ingredient: 100% Tsubaki Oil

    Size: 70 mL (2,3 oz) / 118 mL (3.9 oz) / 1 L (33.8 oz) / 1.8 L (60.9 oz)

This oil has been produced on the island of Toshima (Isu Shoto), off Tokyo, for more than a century. It is used by many Japanese wood workers as well as specialists in ancient blade (shinken) who are looking for a more stable oil than the Choji oil.

The 70 and 118 mL are conditionned in glass bottles. 1 and 1.8 L are conditionned in metal cans. Cans are not available in stock and require about a week before shipping.

Treatment with Camellia oil is recommended by the craftsmen who make our wooden weapons. The regular oiling is necessary for unvarnished weapons. It is recommended also for the maintenance of Iaito and Shinken.

    Utilization on wooden weapons:
Once every 2 months in the wet season, 2 times per month during dry season. For a better preservation of your weapons, it is advisable to carefully rub them with a dry cloth after each use. When you apply the oil, clean the wood surface by rubbing vigorously with a dry cloth, then apply the oil in a thin layer directly with the hand. Allow to dry.
If your weapons are not painted it will not be necessary to sand, but if they are, sanding will help the wood to absorb more oil.

Note that this Camelia oil is initialy intended for skin and hair care. We've selected this oil for it's unmatched quality: 100% pure camelia oil, no additive, cold pressed, cosmetic grade, almost odorless, and halal certified.

    Product Information & Size Chart

    • Deluxe Bokken 101.5 cm - Red/White Oak

      Made in Japan (Kyushu)
Chevroned Spine | Rounded butt | Long Kissaki
Red Oak or White Oak available

This top model is available in red and white oak, but also Sunuke or Tsubaki via the "Deluxe Bokken - Exotic Woods" product datasheet. It is characterized by a more thorough finish than the standard model and a more stringent selection of the wood used. The red oak model is made of high-quality "Ichiikashi". White oak such are also more thoroughly selected, notably denser (and dark) on the standard model.

This product is also available in the Deluxe Bokken & Shoto [Daisho Set] with a 1000 YEN rebate in comparison to separate purchases.

      • Choice of wood species: red oak, white oak.
      • Available Finish: Standard Finish, Seido Special Finish.
      • Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki

      Finish options:

In 2021, with concerns for the workers, all workshops greatly reduced the number of urethane-varnished weapons and replaced the finish with "Candle Wax". Seido is now transitioning to a new finish offer for the majority of its weapons.

Standard Finish: At Seido, we complete the workshop finishes with Camelia oil treatment by default. This is the standard Seido finish.
We do not apply any additional polishing for this finish, so some weapons might have a slightly rough surface.
For maintenance, we recommend oiling your weapons about once a month with a vegetal-based oil.

Seido Special Finish: For this special Finish, we first apply a Camelia oil polish (oiling and sanding the weapons with oiled sandpaper), then we finish the weapon with high-quality beeswax. This finish makes the wood as smooth as it can be and guarantee excellent protection for several months.
For maintenance, we recommend at least oil your weapons every month or so. You can also apply wax a few hours after oiling your weapons (if some oil remains on the wood, remove it with a piece of cloth or tissue).

      exceptional craftmanship

received a Deluxe Bokken - white oak, with seido special finish and the quality and craftsmanship to my view is exceptional. The Bokken is absolutely simetrical and it shows the natural lines of the wood. To the touch is very soft yet one can have a very firm grip without it to slip due to the special finish. The wood is beautiful. Once can see immediately the dedication and effort for the perfection of the art. Thank you.

      Absolutley beautiful!

I could not be happier!!! The bokken is absolutely beautiful. My wife and I went to Japan where we did a Samurai experience in Kyoto. I wanted to buy a wood bokken as a memento of the experience, but unfortunately, we didn’t have enough room to bring one back to Australia. Upon returning I found your website and was very impressed with what I saw. Thank you so much for an amazing piece of art that will bring us lasting memories of our incredible holiday in Japan for many years to come.

      Japanese Craftsmanship at it's finest

My second deluxe bokken with seido finished arrived yesterday, and I cannot be more pleased. It's beautiful finish, color, grain and feel to the touch, as well as balance, all are amazing. Having already bought a deluxe bokken, I knew exactly what to expect, and chose to buy another because I haven't held a better bokken since I started Iaido, but also to support Japanese craftsmanship. I don't think there are many bokkens that are better than this.

The best bokuto on the market in 2024

I've ordered bokuto from a number of different Japanese budogu shops carrying wooden weapons made by the remaining workshops in Miyakonojo. Workshop preferences aside, I think the shirakashi kenmine (deluxe) bokuto offered by Seido are the best quality for your money currently available in 2024, especially for full contact kumitachi training. It's evident that the Seido staff are thoughtful about every step of the order fulfillment process, from oiling and inspection of the weapons prior to shipping, to the packaging of the items. The wood of the deluxe model is a step up from the standard model in both tightness/density and straightness, both of which are important factors to consider when selecting a weapon for contact practice. Sadly, this quality of white oak will not be available forever, so I also appreciate the many blog posts and guides on weapon maintenance that Seido offers to the public.

      Beautiful bokken

Not only was this bokken beautiful, it is perfectly weighted. I used it in practice, and I was very satisfied. I was having a hard time with stopping my strikes, and the form and weight of this bokken made that easier. I have been practicing for about a year, so it is good bokken for beginners.

      Just perfect

I ordered white oak version and it is perfect. The wood is solid and feels very reliable. Quality of processing is excellent. Curvature, form, kissaki and ather elements are hard to imagine to make better. Special finish makes it feel like it made out of stone. Well balanced while a cut and it is pleasure to train paired exercises with it. Definitely recommend to get one of these.

      SeidoShop does it again!

My expectations are always high when dealing with SeidoShop, and they always meet them. So, easy online ordering, reasonable prices, excellent craftsmanship, and fast international delivery. They nailed all of them, again. I’m very pleased with my bokken, and can hardly wait to start training with it.

      Pristine and Perfect

I would first like to thank SeidoShop for their outstanding customer service, as they were extremely transparent with the entire process from ordering all the way to shipment tracking.

I ordered the Deluxe Shirakashi Bokken with Seido Special Finish, as a gift for my partner. Together we gleefully awaited the product, which surprisingly arrived very fast (for international standards) to our country, which notoriously has stingy customs procedures. This proves that their process of shipping method selection should really be trusted, as it only took 3 days from shipment to arrival, with no damage to the box nor the product!

Upon opening, we are greeted with perhaps one of the best wooden swords I have ever seen and touched. The Seido Special Finish gave the white wood an almost chalk and marble-like texture, smooth yet not slippery. Even as amateurs in terms of martial arts and woodworking, I and my partner felt the dedication with the weapon's shape, balance, and again, the immaculate texture.

Additionally, we found a funny mistake: we ordered two pairs of Plastic Tsuba and Tsubadome, despite only ordering one bokken. However, I now see this as foreshadowing for future purchases.

Shout out to Nicolas for their patience in guiding us with our custom engraving!

Thank you very much Seido, we hope for more successful transactions in the future!

      Perfect every time

I have ordered from Seido a number of times over the years. Each time the communication, delivery speed, and the quality of the product, are top notch. This time is no different. It adds a certain kind of warmth knowing the bokken is made using traditional methods and quality wood. And at a reasonable price. I hope Seido continues for years to come as I will be a life long customer.
