Camellia Oil - Tsubaki abura

Made in Japan (Isu Islands)

Ingredient: 100% Tsubaki Oil

Size: 70 mL (2,3 oz) / 118 mL (3.9 oz) / 1 L (33.8 oz) / 1.8 L (60.9 oz)

This oil has been produced on the island of Toshima (Isu Shoto), off Tokyo, for more than a century. It is used by many Japanese wood workers as well as specialists in ancient blade (shinken) who are looking for a more stable oil than the Choji oil.

The 70 and 118 mL are conditionned in glass bottles. 1 and 1.8 L are conditionned in metal cans. Cans are not available in stock and require about a week before shipping.

Treatment with Camellia oil is recommended by the craftsmen who make our wooden weapons. The regular oiling is necessary for unvarnished weapons. It is recommended also for the maintenance of Iaito and Shinken.

Utilization on wooden weapons:
Once every 2 months in the wet season, 2 times per month during dry season. For a better preservation of your weapons, it is advisable to carefully rub them with a dry cloth after each use. When you apply the oil, clean the wood surface by rubbing vigorously with a dry cloth, then apply the oil in a thin layer directly with the hand. Allow to dry.
If your weapons are not painted it will not be necessary to sand, but if they are, sanding will help the wood to absorb more oil.

Note that this Camelia oil is initialy intended for skin and hair care. We've selected this oil for it's unmatched quality: 100% pure camelia oil, no additive, cold pressed, cosmetic grade, almost odorless, and halal certified.

Product Information & Size Chart

  • Hon Kokutan - Superior Tanto

    Made in Japan (Kyushu)

Flat Spine | Rounded butt | Short Kissaki

This African ebony (Hon Kokutan) Tanto has an extensive finish: a Hanmaru Tsukagashi (rounded handle), a Hiramine (flat spine), and a Shokissaki (short tip).

Ebony wood weapons are heavy and are not intended for contact practice.

African ebony is the rarest, most valuable, and, of course, the most expensive of woods offered. This is a luxury wood, not necessarily very strong but extremely heavy. It is used to make ornamental Tanto. The African ebony Tanto are often offered to a teacher by his students as a gift during major occasions. The wood used by our master craftsman is directly imported from Africa.

    • Finish : Unvarnished (camelia oil-polished)
    • Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki

All our high-end weapons are offered unvarnished (camellia oil polish finish). Note that unvarnished weapons are much more pleasant to the touch as well as usage.
Unvarnished weapons are more ecologically-friendly, but they require regular (monthly) maintenance with oil (camellia or wood maintenance oil) and they can only be made from the finest woods. Given the need for maintenance of these weapons, our stocks are limited. Also, since the craftsmen must select the best wood possible to manufacture these weapons, the processing time is longer than for varnished weapons.

Please note that due to the rarity of the wood and the limited release of this product, engravings are not available.

    Work of Art

An absolute work of art and dedication to details. The matt, almost black colour accentuates the lines forming the spine and facets of the tanto’s kissaki You can really appreciate the craftsmanship needed to shape such hard wood.

The finish is smooth and almost velvety to touch. The weight is well balanced so it is easy to hold. Only when you are holding it then you realised that the slopes that from the spine of the blade is angled just right to fit your thumb perfectly. The slopes also fits your index finger perfectly if you are holding the tanto in the blade up position.

Such workmanship and attention to details can only come from craftsman with pride in his work. A treasure indeed.
