  • Deluxe Bokken 101.5 cm - Hon Kokutan

    Made in Japan (Kyushu)
Chevroned Spine | Rounded butt | Long Kissaki | Kotobuki Style
    Hon Kokutan (African Ebony)
Each model is unique - and you choose it directly from its pictures!

This African ebony (Hon Kokutan) Bokken has a very extensive finish: a hanmaru tsukagashi (rounded), a kenmine upper edge, and an elongated tokudaikissaki tip. African ebony is directly imported from Africa, it is completely black and does not present any node or mark.
On the tsukagashira (pommel), you will find the mark of the workshop (a cross), and on the left side of the tsuka, master Aramaki's signature. "Hyuga no kuni, Miyakonojo, Junin, Sandaime, Kazuhiro Saku", meaning "Made by Kazuhiro, third of the name, a resident of Miyakonojo, province of Hyuga."

Ebony wood bokken are very heavy and will suit practitioners who are rather well built and are more particularly intended for Suburi. These bokken will also make excellent gifts following the successful passing of an exam.

African ebony is the rarest, most valuable, and of course the most expensive of woods. This is a luxury wood, not necessarily very strong but extremely heavy. It is used to make ornamental bokken, and also for suburi practice. The African ebony bokken are often offered to a teacher by his students as a gift during major occasions. The wood used by our master craftsman is directly imported from Africa.

Each model is selected based on its unique specifications and pictures. Please check the product pictures to choose your model.
This model is offered in classic deluxe shape (presenting a line between tsuka and blade), or in tsubanashi shape (deletion of the line between tsuka and blade allowing a grip on a much larger portion of the bokken).

    • Wood species: African ebony (Hon Kokutan)
    • Style : Deluxe Bokken shape (Tokusei) or Tsubanashi shape.
    • Finish: Non-varnished (camelia oil polish).
    • Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki

All our high-end bokken are offered nonvarnished (camellia oil polish finish). Note that unvarnished weapons are much more pleasant to the touch as well as usage.
Unvarnished weapons are more ecologically friendly, but they require regular (monthly) maintenance with oil (camellia or wood maintenance oil) and they can only be made from the finest, Japanese quality woods. Given the need for the maintenance of these weapons, our stocks are limited. Also, since the craftsmen must select the best wood possible to manufacture these weapons, the processing time is longer than for varnished weapons. If engraved, out of stock, or made to order, the shipping time can take up to 6 weeks in case of shortage.

Quality material, but craftsmanship not as expected

When compared with a Hon Biwa bokken brought a month ago, the craftsmanship of this bokken is not as good as expected as evidenced from a slight asymmetrical lateral blade line and thus result in slight asymmetrical tip of blade, could it because of hardness of the material so difficult to work with or maybe this is a proof of handmade product.

The whole bokken is of uniform black colour at first glance. However, there are one to two slightly brown line at the tip of blade when view it under the sun.

For weight comparison, it is Not significantly heavier than Hon Biwa.

Worthy of the material but not the craftsmanship this time

    Got it!!

800g, excellent balance, and I can't use it for practice as I don't want to damage it with contact techniques.
I know ebony wood as I do cut wood myself. Because there's no visible wood grain, all the point of appreciating such piece is the cut, the work of the craftsman. It's beautiful, clean, perfectly cut. It's also the first time I see the blade cut flattened like this. Excellent craftsmanship.
Despite a price 1 digit above regular Bokken, it is worth it and it's clear that the craftsman made this piece with the highest expectations in mind.
I am very satisfied with this Bokken!

    Fantastico...

Questo bokken è a dir poco perfetto. L’ho comprato principalmente per eseguire i suburi. Non l’ho ancora provato ad usarlo nel “combattimento”. La spedizione è arrivata nei giusti tempi. Grazie mille Seido.

    Super Heavy Suburi Bokken

This is a super heavy bokken, made of the finest wood. The weight comes close to a light weight iaito, so it is perfect for suburi practise. Nothing for precision training but something for training your arms. It has a fine engraving and looks very impressive. Superfast delivery.
