Camellia Oil - Tsubaki abura
Made in Japan (Isu Islands)
Ingredient: 100% Tsubaki Oil
Size: 70 mL (2,3 oz) / 118 mL (3.9 oz) / 1 L (33.8 oz) / 1.8 L (60.9 oz)
This oil has been produced on the island of Toshima (Isu Shoto), off Tokyo, for more than a century. It is used by many Japanese wood workers as well as specialists in ancient blade (shinken) who are looking for a more stable oil than the Choji oil.
The 70 and 118 mL are conditionned in glass bottles. 1 and 1.8 L are conditionned in metal cans. Cans are not available in stock and require about a week before shipping.
Treatment with Camellia oil is recommended by the craftsmen who make our wooden weapons. The regular oiling is necessary for unvarnished weapons. It is recommended also for the maintenance of Iaito and Shinken.
Utilization on wooden weapons:
Once every 2 months in the wet season, 2 times per month during dry season. For a better preservation of your weapons, it is advisable to carefully rub them with a dry cloth after each use. When you apply the oil, clean the wood surface by rubbing vigorously with a dry cloth, then apply the oil in a thin layer directly with the hand. Allow to dry.
If your weapons are not painted it will not be necessary to sand, but if they are, sanding will help the wood to absorb more oil.
Note that this Camelia oil is initialy intended for skin and hair care. We've selected this oil for it's unmatched quality: 100% pure camelia oil, no additive, cold pressed, cosmetic grade, almost odorless, and halal certified.

Iwama Ryu Bokken, Jo & Tanto Set - White Oak
Made in Japan (Kyushu)
Available in white oak. This set includes an Iwama Ryu Bokken (white oak), a classic jo (2 diameters to choose from), and a classic tanto. Each weapon is manufactured from a single piece of wood from the southern island Kyushu (Japan). Ideal for beginners as well as advanced practitioners, this set is a classic of our catalog.
White oak are more thoroughly selected, notably more dense (and dark) than the standard models.
With its straight cut (blunt) Kissaki (tip), tsuka (handle), and special thickness for the work of "Tenouchi" (hold), the Iwama Ryu model is intended for practitioners of aikido, and more particularly for practitioners from the Iwama Ryu style. Only slightly curved, slightly longer than a conventional model, it is very solid and heavy and can do wonders for suburi.
The standard thickness of a Jo is 24 mm (8 bu) and the 27 models are designed to work tanren (reinforcement), which is very important in some Aikido schools. The 27 mm model is very strong, which also makes it a great Jo practice with very violent contacts.
- Choice of wood species: white oak.
- Contains: Deluxe Iwama Bokken, Classic Jo and Deluxe Tanto.
- Jo Diameter: 24 mm (8bu) or 27 mm (9bu) .
- Available finish: Standard Finish or Seido Special Finish
- Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki
Finish options:
In 2021, with concerns for the workers, all workshops greatly reduced the number of urethane-varnished weapons and replaced the finish with "Candle Wax". Seido is now transitioning to a new finish offer for the majority of its weapons.
Standard Finish: At Seido, we complete the workshop finish with Camelia oil treatment by default. This is the standard Seido finish.
We do not apply any additional polishing for this finish, so some weapons might have a slightly rough surface.
For maintenance, we recommend that you oil your weapons about once a month with a vegetal-based oil.Seido Special Finish: For this special Finish, we first apply a Camelia oil polish (oiling and sanding the weapons with oiled sandpaper), then we finish the weapon with high-quality beeswax. This finish makes the wood as smooth as it can be and guarantees excellent protection for several months.
For maintenance, we recommend at least to oil your weapons every month or so. You can also apply wax a few hours after oiling your weapons (if some oil remains on the wood, remove it with a piece of cloth or tissue).Iwama Ryu Bokken, Jo & Tanto - Specifications Dimensions Iwama Ryu Bokken Deluxe Jo Deluxe Tanto Full length: 103 cm 127.6 cm 29 cm Blade length: 76 cm - 19.5 cm Tsuka length: 27 cm - 9.5 cm Tsuka diameter: 38 x 28 mm 24, 27 mm 35 x 24 mm Tsukagashira (shape): Taira (flat butt) - Hanmaru (roundet butt) Kissaki: Squared Kissaki - Shokissaki (short) Mine: Hiramine (flat spine) - Hiramine (flat) Weight - Shirakashi: 650 ~ 750 g 8bu > 500 ~ 600 g

"Iwama Ryu", sometimes also called "Takemusu Aiki", is a current of Aikido initiated by Morihiro Saito Sensei, a close disciple of the founder of Aikido reputed to have codified accurately and efficiently the practice aikido weapons: Aikiken and Aikijo. This style is represented in France by Daniel Toutain, Patricia Guerri and Philippe Voarino and it focuses on the practice of weapons, giving them equal importance with the bare hands practice. In fact, the practice with a bokken that matches the standards of the school is particularly important. The practice of Aikiken Iwama Ryu, besides its extreme precision, develops power input (tenouchi), due to the relative thickness of the bokken and striking power.
