  • Deluxe Bokken 101.5 cm - Shima Kokutan

    Made in Japan (Kyushu)
Chevroned Spine | Rounded butt | Long Kissaki | Deluxe Style
    Shima Kokutan (Asian Ebony)
    Unique piece!

This Asian ebony (Shima Kokutan) Bokken has a very extensive finish: a hanmaru tsukagashira (rounded), a kenmine upper edge, and an elongated daikissaki tip.
On the tsukagashira (pommel), you will find the mark of the workshop (a cross), and on the left side of the tsuka, master Aramaki's signature. "Hyuga no kuni, Miyakonojo, Junin, Sandaime, Kazuhiro Saku", meaning "Made by Kazuhiro, third of the name, a resident of Miyakonojo, province of Hyuga."

"Shima" in Japanese means "striped", it is named so because this wood is characterized by clearer (brown) lines inside its black ebony. This wood is very heavy and very hard and is commonly used for furniture and luxury items.

The "Aramaki Gold Signature" is a special product that features an ebony made Tsuba and Tsubadome. This is the quintessence of the Aramaki workshop art, but it is destined to be displayed, not to be used for practice. The signature is painted with genuine Japanese natural dye.

This model is offered in classic deluxe shape (presenting a line between tsuka and blade). Please note that the Tsuba & Tsubadome cannot be removed from the Bokken.

    • Wood species: Asian ebony (Shima Kokutan)
    • Style : Deluxe Bokken shape (Tokusei) .
    • Finish: Non-varnished (camelia oil polish).
    • Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki

All our high-end bokken are offered nonvarnished (camellia oil polish finish). Note that unvarnished weapons are much more pleasant to the touch as well as usage.
Unvarnished weapons are more ecologically friendly, but they require regular (monthly) maintenance with oil (camellia or wood maintenance oil) and they can only be made from the finest, Japanese quality woods. Given the need for the maintenance of these weapons, our stocks are limited. Also, since the craftsmen must select the best wood possible to manufacture these weapons, the processing time is longer than for varnished weapons.

    Master Aramaki's Work Displayed

Here is Master Aramaki's work, displayed over a Meiji period Byōbu (late 19thC, two panel shoji screen) of Mount Fuji, in silver leaf. Honored to host this piece, and to support Seido's mission and the importance of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

For compliance reasons, reviews placed in French and Japanese and imported here on February 2024 do not display as 'verified'.
When importing Japanese reviews, the impossibility to automatically determine the presence of a familly name forced us to label all Japanese reviews as 'anonymous' (Familly names in roman characters have been filtered out).
