Seido Special Jo - 135 cm
Made in Japan (Kyushu region)
Available woods: White Oak
Length: 135 cm | Diameter: 27 mm
Finish: Standard Finish or Seido Special Finish
This 135 cm Jo has been designed as the perfect compromise for all practitioners looking for longer Jo than the classic one 4.21 shaku (127.6 cm).
As the traditional Japanese wooden weapons industry is suffering from the lack of good timber and the number of workshops has dramatically been reduced in the last few years, it is now very difficult to offer custom-made length Jo. That's why we decided to offer this special length Jo, taking into account the most common requests from our customers over the past 10 years.
This Jo is available in Shirakashi (white oak). The length is 135 cm, with a 9 bu (27 mm) diameter.
9 bu Jo are perfect to work tanren (reinforcement), which is very important in some Aikido schools. They are also very strong, making them great Jo to practice with violent contacts.
However, it is important to understand that it is not recommended, (unless instructed otherwise by your teacher) to practice a Kata with your partner using a Jo of a different length. Indeed, a longer Jo reaches further and affects the strength of the lever arm during the technique. The Kata will therefore be modified which is to avoid when learning, at least in the beginning. In most schools, special length Jo are mainly used for further, personal research, once the basics are mastered.

Finish options:
In 2021, with concerns for the workers, all workshops greatly reduced the number of urethane-varnished weapons and replaced the finish with "Candle Wax". Seido is now transitioning to a new finish offer for the majority of its weapons.
Standard Finish: At Seido, we complete the workshop finish with Camelia oil treatment by default. This is the standard Seido finish.
We do not apply any additional polishing for this finish, so some weapons might have a slightly rough surface.
For maintenance, we recommend that you oil your weapons about once a month with a vegetal-based oil.Seido Special Finish: For this special Finish, we first apply a Camelia oil polish (oiling and sanding the weapons with oiled sandpaper), then we finish the weapon with high-quality bee wax. This finish makes the wood as smooth as it can be and guarantees excellent protection for several months.
For maintenance, we recommend oiling your weapons every month or so. You can also apply wax a few hours after oiling your weapons (if some oil remains on the wood, remove it with a piece of cloth or tissue).Seido Special Jo - Specifications Wood Shirakashi
