Tachibana Kamon Engraving
Citrus tachibana (tachibana) - 「橘」 in Japanese.
The Tachibana is one of the 10 most used family emblems (judaimon) in Japan. Since ancient times, two tachibana trees have been placed in front of the Shishinden, the Imperial Palace's Ceremony Hall in Kyoto. Ukon no Tachibana at the right, Sakon no Tachibana at the left. Tachibana are evergreen trees and were, as such, a symbol of eternity.
The first to use a tachibana as emblem were the members of the powerful Tachibana clan, one of the top four noble families during the Heian period (794-1185). After them, several Tachibana clans were created throughout Japan’s history (but named with different Chinese characters). They also chose to use one of the numerous variations of the Tachibana mon.
The Tachibana mon has about 200 known variations. The most commonly used one being the Maru ni Tachibana.
Owada Masako, present Empress of Japan, used a Maru ni Tachibana mon before marrying into the imperial family.
