Kashiwa Kamon Engraving
Quercus dentata (daimyo oak) - 「柏」in Japanese
The Kashiwa is one of the 10 most used family emblems (Jūdaimon) in Japan. In ancient times, Japanese people presented offerings to their gods using oak leaves as trays. Since then the oak has been considered a sacred tree.
It is believed that Shinto priests were the first to use Kashiwa emblems as shinmon (shrine emblem). The use of Kashiwa mon eventually spread throughout Japan to become one of the most popular emblems. The Yamanouchi, lords of the Tosa domain (modern Kochi prefecture), used a slimmer variation of the Kashiwa mon. Famous masters like Awa Kenzo (kyudo - Maru ni Mitsu Kashiwa) or Kano Jigoro (judo - Maru ni Gotoku Kashiwa) used an oak emblem as well.
Mitsu Kashiwa (3 oak leaves).
Kashiwa mon can feature from 1 to 9 leaves, but the 3-leaf variation is the most common. This mon as been used as a shrine emblem many times throughout history.
Maru ni Mitsu Kashiwa (3 oak leaves in a ring).
There are about 450 known variations of the Kashiwa mon, among all the people / institutions (shrine, temple...) who use a Kashiwa mon, 80% actually use the Maru ni Mitsu Kashiwa, making it one of the most, if not the most, used kamon in Japan. Famous kyudo master Awa Kenzo (who taught Eugen Herrigel) used this emblem.
Maru ni Tosa Kashiwa (Tosa Domain oak in a ring).
The kamon of the Yamanouchi clan, lords of the Tosa domain.
Maru ni Tsuru Kashiwa (3 oak leaves and vines in a ring).
Another commonly used variation of the Kashiwa mon
