  • Jiki Shinkage Ryu (Naginata Yo) Bokken - White Oak

    Made in Japan (Kyushu)

Flat Spine | Flat butt | Small Kissaki

    White Oak

This Jiki Shinkage Ryu Bokken is made from a single piece of white oak from the southern islands of Kyushu (Japan). This Bokken is for practitioners of the "Jiki Shinkage Naginatajutsu" school. However, it is also appreciated by many teachers of different Aikido styles, for example, the late master Tamura. This thin and light Bokken is valued by Aikido practitioners working on finesse and precision. The almost inexistent curvature allows practicing in a very direct manner. Anyhow, because of the mentioned particularities, this Bokken is rather to be understood as a complement in addition to a standard Bokken.

Please note: This type differs from the thicker "Jiki Shinkage Hojo Bokken", designed for heavy contact Bokken against Bokken practice and for Suburi.

    • Choice of wood species: white oak.
    • Available finish: Standard Finish or Seido Special Finish.
    • Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki

    Finish options:

In 2021, with concerns for the workers, all workshops greatly reduced the number of urethane-varnished weapons and replaced the finish with "Candle Wax". Seido is now transitioning to a new finish offer for the majority of its weapons.

Standard Finish: At Seido, we complete the workshop finish with Camelia oil treatment by default. This is the standard Seido finish.
We do not apply any additional polishing for this finish, so some weapons might have a slightly rough surface.
For maintenance, we recommend that you oil your weapons about once a month with a vegetal-based oil.

Seido Special Finish: For this special Finish, we first apply a Camelia oil polish (oiling and sanding the weapons with oiled sandpaper), then we finish the weapon with high-quality beeswax. This finish makes the wood as smooth as it can be and guarantee excellent protection for several months.
For maintenance, we recommend at least oiling your weapons every month or so. You can also apply wax a few hours after oiling your weapons (if some oil remains on the wood, remove it with a piece of cloth or tissue).

    About Jiki Shinkage Ryu Naginata:

The Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage Ryu evolved from the Shinkage Ryu and the Kage Ryu, which both have disappeared. Its beginnings are situated in the 16th century and attributed to Matsumoto Bizen No Kami Naokatsu.
But the Naginata version is much more recent. Developed in the late 19th century by Satake Yoshinori, a former Jiki Shinkage Ryu student, and his wife Satake Shigeo. An emphasis is placed on preserving the Kata in its original form and leaving very little room for improvisation. This art was rapidly introduced into girls' schools, which explains why most practitioners are, still today, women. Jiki Shinkage Ryu Naginata became famous after the victory of several well-known teachers over Kendo practitioners, but the school no longer focus on competition.

    Beautifully Crafted Bokken

This was a wonderful first bokken! I practice Meiwakan-style which is based on Tamura Sensei’s teachings. He preferred the lighter bokken which really helps me practice the techniques with finesse (not just relying on my muscles). I got the special finish and would highly recommend! At first I thought it was too smooth and would slip out of my hands. But quickly after use, the base got just the slightest bit grippier which makes it perfect!

    Parfait
