    Camellia Oil - Tsubaki abura

    Made in Japan (Isu Islands)

    Ingredient: 100% Tsubaki Oil

    Size: M > 70 mL / L > 118 mL

This oil has been produced on the island of Toshima (Isu Shoto), off Tokyo, for more than a century. It is used by many Japanese wood workers as well as specialists in ancient blade (shinken) who are looking for a more stable oil than the Choji oil.

Treatment with Camellia oil is recommended by the craftsmen who make our wooden weapons. The regular oiling is necessary for unvarnished weapons. It is recommended also for the maintenance of Iaito and Shinken.

    Utilization on wooden weapons:
Once every 2 months in the wet season, 2 times per month during dry season. For a better preservation of your weapons, it is advisable to carefully rub them with a dry cloth after each use. When you apply the oil, clean the wood surface by rubbing vigorously with a dry cloth, then apply the oil in a thin layer directly with the hand. Allow to dry.
If your weapons are not painted it will not be necessary to sand, but if they are, sanding will help the wood to absorb more oil.

Note that this Camelia oil is initialy intended for skin and hair care. We've selected this oil for it's unmatched quality: 100% pure camelia oil, no additive, cold pressed, cosmetic grade, almost odorless, and halal certified.

    • Yakumaru Jigen Ryu Bokken - Red/White Oak

      Made in Japan (Kyushu)
Flat Spine | Flat Butt | Straight cut Kissaki
Red Oak or White Oak available

This Bokken is made from a single piece of oak (red or white) from the southern islands of Kyushu (Japan). It is crafted for Yakumaru Jigen Ryu (or sometimes also called Nodachi Jigen Ryu) practitioners and it is hard to recommend it for practice outside of this school, due to its very specific shape, weight and balance.
With a length of 100 cm, it is slightly shorter than a standard Bokken, but with its 700g, it is significantly heavier than a standard Bokken. With a Kissaki (tip) cut straight, and a fairly thick blade, this Bokken's balance point is shifted toward the Kissaki.
The Yakumaru Jigen Ryu is also very specific for its triangular section shape. The flat part being the blade and the top of the triangle the mune (top of the blade). This design is especially well suited for the very heavy contact suburi training of the school, making this Bokken a lot more resistent.

This Bokken is not to be confused with the main branch's Jigen Ryu Bokken, which features a shape that is totally different and used in another Jigen Ryu line.

      • Choice of wood species: red oak, white oak
      • Available finish: Urethane varnish or camellia oil polish
      • Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki

Non varnished - Oil polish option:

All our high-end weapons are available either varnished with urethane or polished with camellia oil. The latter is more pleasant to the touch and these unvarnished weapons are also more ecologically-friendly, but they require regular (monthly) maintenance with oil (camellia or wood maintenance oil). Further, they can only be made from the finest timber of Japanese quality. Given the need for maintenance, our stocks are limited. Also, since the craftsmen must select the best wood possible to manufacture these Bokken and Jo, the processing time is longer than for varnished weapons. Please note that the oil polish can darken the wood significantly.

      About Jigen Ryu School:

The Jigen Ryu was founded by Togo Tobei Shigetaka, a Satsuma domain Samurai, at the end of the 16th century. Togo was a student of Terasaka Yakuro Masatsune, third Soke of the Tenshinsho Jigen school (the first of the "Jigen line") and Marume Kurandonosuke Tessai, founder of the Taisha Ryu. The story says that the new Jigen Ryu concepts were inspired by a sudden divine revelation while studying the Lotus Sutra which was also the reason he changed the characters used for "Jigen Ryu" from "self power revelation" to "sudden revelation".
Yakumaru Jigen ryu is a branch later formed by Yakumaru Kenchin, a senior student of Togo Shigetaka. Yakumaru Kenchin combined the Jigen Ryu fundamental principles with his knowledged in Nodachi techniques to create his own branch. It is said that Yakumaru Jigen Ryu focuses on simplified techniques in comparison to Jigen Ryu, but it also differenciates by its battojutsu techniques (and notably the 'Nuki technique') and its heavy Nodachi techniques.
The style is still alive today. Vice Japan published quite a nice interesting Youtube interview of Hiroharu Wada, a Yakumaru Jigen Ryu teacher a few years ago.
