This made in Japan Tsuba features sea waves and plovers of the satsuma region (Kyushu).
Chidori is seen as a symbol of perseverance as it overcomes strong winds and high waves during its migration. Chidori is a very common motif on kimono that is traditionally classed as a winter motif, but commonly featured on summer items to evoke the coolness of winter. Chidori's cry is perceived as the sound "chiyo", which can be writtern 千代 in Kanji with the meaning 'thousand generations'.
