Hakama Alteration - Koshiita height adjustment

  • The Koshiita should sit on top of the belt. (Seido Hakama are fitted to be worn with a common Judo type belt.)
  • High Koshiita (Iaido style): The Koshiita is higher than the front strap, to be worn with a Kakuobi/large Iai type belt.
  • Low Koshiita: The base of the Koshiita is about 3 cm lower than the front strap (which is done by moving the front strap slightly up). This allows to fold the front belt into the "Judo type belt" without getting a crumpled Hakama when tied.
  • Adjusting the height of the Koshiita according to your belt/style of wearing, helps that the pleats fall nicely and flat.

Seido Tenugui - Seishin Itto Nanigoto ka Narazaran

Made in Japan

This traditional Tenugui (Japanese hand towel) can be used as such in Kendo, Nippon Kempo or Jukendo but also as small towel to wipe off sweat during practice.

Roughly translated as "where there is a will, there is a way", this well known proverb "Seishin Itto Nanigoto Ka Narazaran" means more precisely "when the mind is concentrated, nothing is impossible".

Please hand-wash in cold water before first use.

Made 100% from japanese made unbleached sashiko cotton, this product is eco friendly.

This product is a Seido original product designed by our team

Here are all the designs we offer and their meaning:

  • The Seido embroidery is based on the Seido label attached to all Seido equipments.
  • The Aikido embroidery is based on a calligraphy found in the main dojo of Aikikai Hombu Dojo. It was created by Morihei Ueshiba O-Sensei when he was 80 years old, a period in his life when his calligraphy reached its peak. Note that the depth and extension of ideograms are a sign of an open mind.
  • The "Ki' embroidery is based on the same calligraphy as the "Aikido embroidery" but only contains the second kanji "Ki".
  • Judo - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Karatedo - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Kendo - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Iaido - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Jujutsu - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Zanshin - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : Remaining mind, or lingering mind.
  • Mushin - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : No mind (mental state), or mind without mind.
  • Heijoshin - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : Calm, imperturbable, relaxed heart/mind
  • Shingitai - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : The unification of mind, skills and body.
  • Takemusu Aiki - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : Aikido concept, the unity of martial techniques through the concept of Aiki.

Option "Name Embroidery":

Optionally, you can add your name as embroidery. It will be embroidered on the left of the bottom part (same high as the Seido label), with a font size of 2 cm by 2 cm.
Please note that due to our technical settings and to improve the overall balance, it is only possible to embroider either a first name, a last name or a word (1 word).
For more information about Japanese embroidery, please consult the page "How to Choose your Japanese Embroidery".

Product Information & Size Chart

  • #8000 Cotton Aikido Hakama - Heavy Weight

Made in Japan | Black or Navy

Material: 100% cotton (synthetic color, do not fade).

    Shrinkage: ~1%  |  Weight (size 26): 1.2 kg

Shape: Traditional Aikido cut (flexible koshiita, 7 lines of stitches on straps)

This cotton Hakama is made from a fabric specially selected by Seido for its strength and slightly shiny appearance. This fabric is mainly used in the manufacture of clothing for the Japanese army, precisely due to its high strength. This Hakama is available in black or navy blue. Note that the navy blue is very dark, and therefore often mistaken for black by our clients.

#8000 corresponds to the yarn density, but a higher number does not signify an increase in quality. Indeed, a cotton #20000, for example, would be too rigid for the practice of martial arts. The #8000 is an intermediate model between #6000 and #10000. We did not opt for cotton #10000 for this particular hakama because synthetically-dyed fabric does not benefit from the softening effect of the indigo dye (used for the #10000) and therefore, a tighter weaving would have resulted in a hakama that would be far too steep. The choice of #8000 cotton for this model is the best trade-off between flexibility and strength. The particularly long roll of fabric that we use allows the cut to be made parallel to the lines of weaving and therefore, the Hakama falls perfectly in spite of the tendency that cotton has to crumple.

This model will be suitable for all practitioners seeking a heavy cotton Hakama, without the inherent maintenance difficulty of an indigo hakama. However, we discourage cotton Hakama models to first-time hakama users because they are quite heavy and require a period of adaptation.

For maximum comfort, the strap length is adjusted according to the size of the hakama.

As all our Hakama, this model is fully made in Japan (fabric, cut and stitching).

Option (made to order): sewing of the inside pleats

Cotton Hakama models are particularly difficult to maintain and fold, we, therefore, propose to sew the inner pleats. Although the "wrinkled" aspect of cotton Hakama is a desirable feature for most practitioners who usually choose this model, you might opt for the option of sewing the pleats in order to preserve and identify them more easily during folding after class or during washing. The pleats are sewn on the inside, which makes them completely invisible when worn. The result however is that the pleats are better kept, and the "puffed out" aspect the hakama will be reduced.
