Katori Shinto Ryu Shoto - Red/White Oak & Isu no Ki

    Made in Japan (Kyushu)

Flat Spine | Flat butt | Beveled Kissaki

Red Oak, White Oak and Isu no Ki available

This Katori Shinto Ryu Shoto is made from a single piece of either white or red oak or Isu no Ki, and manufactured in the southern islands of Kyushu (Japan). With a shape slightly shorter but thicker than that of a classic Shoto, this model is used by practitioners of the Kenjutsu school with complete name called "Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu", but are also part of the equipment of certain teachers of the Yoseikan Budo and the Aikibudo.

    • Choice of wood species: red oak, white oak, Isu no Ki
    • Available finish: Urethane varnish or camellia oil polish.
    • Manufacturing workshop: Horinouchi for red and white oak, Aramaki for Isu no ki.

We also offer the Katori Shinto Ryu Bokken (long).

Non varnished - Oil polish option (+ 400 JPY):

All our high-end are available either varnished with urethane or polished with camellia oil although they are much more pleasant to the touch as well as use with the latter.
Unvarnished weapons are more ecologically-friendly, but they requires regular (monthly) maintenance with oil (camellia or wood maintenance oil) and they can only be made from the finest woods of Japanese quality. Given the need for maintenance of these weapons, our stocks are limited. Also, since the craftsmen must select the best wood possible to manufacture these weapons, the processing time is longer than for varnished weapons. If out of stock or made to order, the shipping time can take up to 6 weeks in case of shortage. Please note that the oil finish process can darken the wood significantly.

    About Katori Shinto Ryu :

The school Katori Shinto Ryu, or also called Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu is undoubtedly one of the oldest martial art schools of Japan. Founded mid 15th century by Iizasa Ienao after his retirement at the Shinto Katori Jingu, a shrine dedicated to the Gods of martial arts. This school like most of the traditional schools, does not only understand the techniques with the sword (kenjutsu and iaijutsu), but also numerous techniques with other weapons, such as the Naginata, the spear (sojutsu) and the Shuriken, and techniques without weapons (jujutsu). The teachings of the Katori Shinto differs significantly from other schools in focusing on the training of technical strategies and military logistics. In this school the Soke currently holds no more than a representative role, the technical responsibility is entrusted to Otake Risuke Shihan. The school was popularized in Europe due to certain dissident forms of practice included in the Yoseikan Budo (Minoru Mochizuki) and in the Aikibudo (Alain Floquet) but the official current is quite well represented outside Japan as well.
