|Depth||The stronger the laser, the deeper the engraving. Superficial is quite discreet, standard is deep enough to stand forever, deep can go up to 1 mm depth and creates a burning effect within the engraving.|

Product Information & Size Chart
Kakugata Tonfa - Red Oak
Made in Japan (Kyushu)
Red Oak only
Available in 43 cm, 46 cm, 49 cm and 52 cm
Sold by unit (1)
The Kakugata Tonfa is one of the most classic Japanese Tonfa. Kakugata simply means "square shape" and its dimensions are used as base for all other models. As the thickest and heaviest of all models, the square Tonfa is recommended to advanced practitioners and for hard contact practice in Kobudo and Karate.
Since it is usually advisable to adapt the Tonfa length to the forearm length (protruding the elbow), we offer 4 different sizes: 43 cm, 46 cm, 49 cm and 52 cm
Another frequently asked question about the Tonfa size concerns the handle size. We therefore offer 2 different sizes, standard and large. The large size presents a slightly longer and thicker handle (by about 10%), perfect also for Western practitioners.
Tonfa length: The handle is fixed at about 9 cm to 10 cm from the tip, which means that on a 43 cm Tonfa, you will have about 33 cm in length from the handle to your elbow.
- 43 cm Tonfa > up to 33 cm to elbow
- 46 cm Tonfa > Up to 36 cm to elbow
- 49 cm Tonfa > up to 39 cm to elbow
- 52 cm Tonfa > up to 42 cm
Depending on your school and preferences, you might want to go one size longer.
Handle size: The handle full length is 12 cm, including the knob that prevents the Tonfa from slipping when performing motion techniques. First of all, measure your hand's width, at the level of the knuckles, laying flat on a table and refer as follows:
- Standard handle: hand width up to 9 cm.
- Large handle: hand width up to 11 cm.
Non varnished - Oil polish option:
All our high-end weapons are available either varnished with urethane or polished with camellia oil. The latter is more pleasant to the touch and these unvarnished weapons are also more ecologically-friendly, but they require regular (monthly) maintenance with oil (camellia or wood maintenance oil). Further, they can only be made from the finest timber of Japanese quality. Given the need for maintenance, our stocks are limited. Also, since the craftsmen must select the best wood possible to manufacture these Bokken and Jo, the processing time is longer than for varnished weapons. Please note that the oil polish can darken the wood significantly.

Tonfa Order DisclaimerTonfa can be considered as weapons in some countries. Although, by experience, we know there is no problem with North America and most European countries, we recommend to check that the import of Tonfa is not prohibited in your country before placing your order.
Tonfa are made to order and Seido shall not be held responsible for any difficulties, import refusal or other trouble at customs clearance. In the event of this occurring, only limited refunds (depending on the level of customization) can be granted.
Also, please note that due to international payment regulations, PayPal payment is not available at checkout when ordering a Nunchaku or a Tonfa. If you wish to purchase other products at the same time and use PayPal, we recommend to order the Nunchaku or Tonfa separately. We can still ship all items together if the orders are placed within a few hours and a comment is added in the comment field.
