Kai Menuki - M011
This made in Japan Menuki features shells. Kai (貝), or shell in English were the very first money used for exchanges before metal coins. Shells come in various shapes and colors and are also widely used in Japanese handicraft, either in their original form, of in a powder (grinded) form that could be incorporated to lacquer. Shells were also used in ancient games, and especially the Kai-awase, a game first depicted in the Tale of Genji. Each part of the shell is painted with the same scene, they are returned face down on a table and the game consists in finding the matching pieces. Shells symbolizes wealth and luxury.
