Yashima Gassen Kozuka - Kogatana Tsuka
A Kozuka (小柄), or "small handle" in English is a small Tsuka designed to be fitted with the Kogatana. The Kogatana is a small utility knife that fits into a pocket on the Saya. This is one of the element that explaines that Tsuba have small holes on either or both sides. See product pictures for details on how the Kogatana fits on a Saya.
Made of blackened copper decorated with a gold and silver gilded scenery representing the Yashima battle.
The naval Battle of Yashima (March 22, 1185) followed a long string of defeats by the Taira clan pusshing then to retreat to Yashima. Yashima is famous for the set the Taira had on the island, a small fortress, and improvided imperial palace for emperor Antoku and the imperial regalia they had taken earlier during the war against the Minamoto. The battle of Yashima is also famous for the most famous archery related legend: A very beautiful lady dared the Minamoto to knock off a fan placed atop a boat pole. Challenge accepted, Nasu no Yoichi rode out into the sea on horseback and knocked it off in one shot.- Workshop: Jisei
