Inoshishi Menuki - M043
This made in Japan Menuki features a Japanese wild boar. Very popular in Japanese culture, the Japanese wild boar, or Inoshishi is seen as a fearsome and reckless animal, to the point that many words and expressions referring to recklessness have references to Inoshishi. Spiritually speaking, the boar is the last animal of the Chinese (and Japanese) zodiac. It is said that people born in the year of the pig are determined and impetuous. Hunters see and have seen boar courage as a source of admiration and including the Kanji for Inoshishi in their sons' names were not uncommon. Boars are also seen as symbols of fertility and prosperity. It is mentioned in Japanese literature as early as in the Kojiki the oldest Japanese chronicle. At the time, its importance in the Japanese diet was so important that it was excluded the ban on meat-eating implemented by Emperor Tenmu in 675
