Ika & Tako Menuki - M033
This made in Japan Menuki features squid and octopus. Tako (octopus in English) as well as Ika, (squid in English) are creatures of the deep and are often associated with mystery, the secrets of the ocean, and individual depth. Within Japanese mythology, a giant octopus-like creature was known as Akkorokamui. Ainu reverence of this monster has permeated into Shinto, which has incorporated Akkorokamui as a minor kami (god). Its ability to self-amputate and regenerate its parts and limbs is translated in Shinto beliefs as healing powers. Depending on regions, the emphasis is placed on squid or octopus, but their overall symbolism is similar.
