Sword Maintenance Kit for Iaito & Shinken

Made in Japan

Contains : Choji oil (20 mL), Nuguigami, Uchiko and Uchiko powder.

This maintenance kit for your Iaito or Shinken features Choji Abura (Japanese clove oil) to nourish the Saya of the Iaito or to maintain and protect the blade of a Shinken. Further, it also includes a Uchiko (a chalk powder "ball") and Uchiko powder used for the maintenance of a steel blades. The third item in the box is the Nuguigami, a special paper to wipe off excessive oil and in case of a Shinken also the Uchiko powder.

Same content for each box, only the container changes.

Utilization on Iaito :
Please be aware that the blade of the Iaito are made of chromed alloy and therefore do not need any maintenance. We recommend to oil the blade regularly to help nourish the wood of the Saya from the inside, but we strongly advise against using Uchiko powder as it might slightly scratch the alloy.

Product Information & Size Chart

  • Unryu Koshirae Jisei Iaito (2.30 ~ 2.45 Shaku)

    Made in Japan (Kyushu)
    Hamon Suguha
Habaki: Yujo, copper with black finish | Seppa: Gold
Tsuba: Ryu (dragon) | Menuki: Ryu (dragon) | Fuchi/Kashira: Unryu (Dragon)
Tsukaito: Cotton, black | Sageo: Polyester, black
    Saya: Kuroro (glossy, black)

The Unryu Koshirae is of standard Japanese quality and offers a very good quality/price rate.
Our team has been recommending this model for several years to beginners. It also makes a fine choice for adepts of other arts looking for a practical Iaito without expensive finish or fitting.
The blade is made of high quality reinforced zinc/aluminium bubble-free alloy (duralumin). Note: Alloy blades do not cut and cannot be sharpened.
Just like the blade, all fittings are handmade and the whole product is 100% made in Japan.

Available sizes range from 2.30 Shaku to 2.45 Shaku. The Hamon (pattern on the blade) is a classic Suguha (straight). The Iaito features a copper "Yujo" Habaki with a black finish and gold plated bronze Seppa. The Tsuba, Fuchi/Kashira and Menuki have a classic Ryu (Dragon) design, which gives its name to the sword (Unryu = cloud dragon). The Tsukaito is made of traditional black cotton, and the Sageo is made of black polyester. The Kuroro Saya (black glossy finish) is the most classic lacquer.

This Iaito's design is entirely based on the traditional Asian representation of the mythical Dragon.
In Buddhism, the Dragon is the protector of the divine law. Dragons are sometimes seen as gods or very powerful beings able to bring various kinds of good and evil on earth (rain, thunder, etc.). The Dragon is one of the most popular mythical beast and as such, is tied to an enormous number of myths and legends of all kinds. It’s a symbol of great power, wisdom, and success, and it is said to bring strength, luck and fortune. It is also often associated with the sea.
