This made in Japan Menuki features Sacred lotus & Koi carp The sacred lotus is believed to be showing the way to enlightenment in Japanese buddhism. It also represents the womb of the world in Shingon buddhism and often supports buddhas themselves in many representations. The Lotus Sutra is one of the most popular and influential Mahayana sutras, and the basis Tendai and Nichiren schools of Buddhism were established. It is belived that the Lotus Sutra contains the final teaching of the Buddha, complete and sufficient for ultimate salvation. Closely tied to the Japan's national identity, the koi carp is highly respected and very symbolic. It signifies perseverance and strenght, due its tendency to swim upstream. Nowadays, it is often considered as a symbol of luck, prosperity, and good fortune.
