    • Deluxe Grooved Bokken - With Wooden Tsuba & Saya

      Made in Japan (Kyushu)

Chevroned Spine | Rounded butt | Long Kissaki | Wooden Saya | Wooden Tsuba | Optional Groove

Red Oak or White Oak available

This outstanding Bokken is available in red and white oak. This model is characterized by a thorough finish, a glued wooden Tsuba and a wooden Saya. With its long Kissaki, rounded butt, chevroned spine, and more strictly selected wood this is one of the finest products of the Horinouchi workshop.

This model can be ordered with or without groove, depending on your preference. A grooved model will generate the typical sound that is so important in Iai practice, while keeping the balance point very low, near the Tsuba, similar to a Iaito.
The non-grooved version results in a heavier Bokken with a centre of gravity pushed towards the centre of the blade, and resembles therefore a Shinken. This makes it ideal for a "cutting oriented" practice. Even without groove, this model remains lighter than a standard Bokken.

For this high end model, and to allow the most accurate training, we offer to custom the blade length from 2.30 to 2.55 Shaku (see size table below). Whatever the blade length, the length of the Saya remains the same and is long enough to fit a 2.55 Shaku blade.

The Saya presents a strengthened Kurikata for the Sageo, is reinforced with high quality ebony at the Koiguchi and the Sayajiri. The fact that the Saya is far more complicated to make than the Bokken itself, and requires hours of work by the master, explains the price of this item.
No matter which wood you choose for the Bokken, the Saya is always made of white oak due to its properties to make a strong Saya.

You will find fitted Sageo among the Iaito maintenance products.

      • Choice of wood species: red oak or white oak
      • Available finish: Urethane varnish or camellia oil polish
      • Blade length: 2.30 to 2.55 shaku
      • Manufacturing workshop: Horinouchi for all models
      Blade length recommendation
      ~ 160 cm 2.30 shaku / 69.6 cm
      ~ 165 cm 2.35 shaku / 71.2 cm
      ~ 170 cm 2.40 shaku / 72.7 cm
      ~ 175 cm 2.45 shaku / 74.2 cm (Standard Length)
      ~ 180 cm 2.50 shaku / 75.8 cm
      ~ 185 cm 2.55 shaku / 77.3 cm

      * The length of a Iaito blade does not include the Habaki. However, the blade length stated here, refers to the total length of the Bokken blade. In other words, the Bokken blade will be shorter than the Iaito blade chosen in the same Shaku size. Nevertheless, we do not recommend to opt for a longer blade as it is harder to draw off the Saya from a Bokken than from a Iaito.

Non varnished - Oil polish option (+ 1,000 JPY):

All our high-end bokken are available in urethane varnish or camellia oil polish finish. Note that unvarnished weapons are much more pleasant to the touch as well as usage.
Unvarnished weapons are are more ecologically-friendly, but they requires regular (monthly) maintenance with oil (camellia or wood maintenance oil) and they can only be made from the finest, Japanese quality woods. Given the need for maintenance of these weapons, our stocks are limited. Also, since the craftsmen must select the best wood possible to manufacture these weapons, the processing time is longer than for varnished weapons. If out of stock or made to order, the shipping time can take up to 6 weeks in case of shortage. Please note that the Saya remains varnished on this model.
