Camellia Oil - Tsubaki abura
Made in Japan (Isu Islands)
Ingredient: 100% Tsubaki Oil
Size: 70 mL (2,3 oz) / 118 mL (3.9 oz) / 1 L (33.8 oz) / 1.8 L (60.9 oz)
This oil has been produced on the island of Toshima (Isu Shoto), off Tokyo, for more than a century. It is used by many Japanese wood workers as well as specialists in ancient blade (shinken) who are looking for a more stable oil than the Choji oil.
The 70 and 118 mL are conditionned in glass bottles. 1 and 1.8 L are conditionned in metal cans. Cans are not available in stock and require about a week before shipping.
Treatment with Camellia oil is recommended by the craftsmen who make our wooden weapons. The regular oiling is necessary for unvarnished weapons. It is recommended also for the maintenance of Iaito and Shinken.
Utilization on wooden weapons:
Once every 2 months in the wet season, 2 times per month during dry season. For a better preservation of your weapons, it is advisable to carefully rub them with a dry cloth after each use. When you apply the oil, clean the wood surface by rubbing vigorously with a dry cloth, then apply the oil in a thin layer directly with the hand. Allow to dry.
If your weapons are not painted it will not be necessary to sand, but if they are, sanding will help the wood to absorb more oil.
Note that this Camelia oil is initialy intended for skin and hair care. We've selected this oil for it's unmatched quality: 100% pure camelia oil, no additive, cold pressed, cosmetic grade, almost odorless, and halal certified.

Deluxe Bokken, Jo & Tanto Set - Sunuke / Tsubaki
Made in Japan (Kyushu)
Available in Sunuke or Tsubaki (camellia japonica)This set includes a high quality classic bokken, an 8-bu classic jo (24 mm), and a classic tanto. Each weapon is manufactured in a single piece of wood from the southern islands of Kyushu (Japan).
Sunuke and Camellia have radically opposite technical characteristics but both are great classics of the Japanese wood crafting. Not as luxurious as ebony, these are excellent choices for intermediate practitioners wishing to acquire a bokken that is also a quality work of art. Made by master Nidome and Aramaki, these models undergo a very strict wood selection and special attention is paid to finishing.
Sunuke is a heavy wood used to make weapons for power work while Tsubaki is a lighter wood used for more finesse and precision. These weapons will also make great gifts to someone who passed grading examination. Perfectly usable on the mat, they also make beautiful decorative weapons, in particular for a Kamiza. For the Japanese, Sunuke also bears a close link with the Shinto religion and it is considered to have the power to bind things (musubi).
While Camellia can safely be used by all, Sunuke is particularly heavy and it must be used with caution and recommended for experienced practitioners only.
Due to quotas established by the Japanese government, these woods are available in limited quantities. Therefore, in case of shortage, a manufacturing delay of 5 to 6 weeks is to be expected for restocking.
-
Choice of wood species: Sunuke or Tsubaki (camellia japonica)
- Contains:Deluxe Bokken, Deluxe Jo and Deluxe Tanto.
- Available finish: unvarnished (camellia oil polish).
- Manufacturing workshop: Nidome or Aramaki for all models.
- Tsuba and tsubadome are sold separately.
All our high-end are offered unvarnished (polished with camellia oil) although they are much more pleasant to the touch as well as use with the latter.
Unvarnished weapons are more ecologically-friendly, but they requires regular (monthly) maintenance with oil (camellia or wood maintenance oil) and they can only be made from the finest woods of Japanese quality. Given the need for maintenance of these weapons, our stocks are limited. Also, since the craftsmen must select the best wood possible to manufacture these weapons, the processing time is longer than for varnished weapons. If out of stock or made to order, the shipping time can take up to 6 weeks in case of shortage.Bokken, Jo & Tanto Deluxe - Specifications Dimensions Deluxe Bokken Deluxe Jo Deluxe Tanto Full length: 101.5 cm 127.6 cm 29 cm Blade length: 75.5 cm - 19.5 cm Tsuka length: 26 cm - 9.5 cm Tsuka diameter: 37 x 26 mm 24 mm 35 x 24 mm Tsukagashira: Hanmaru (roundet butt) - Hanmaru (roundet butt) Kissaki: Daikissaki (long) - Shokissaki (short) Mine: Kenmine (chevronned) - Hiramine (flat) Weight - Sunuke: 650 ~ 710 g 620 ~ 680 g ~ 150 g Weight - Tsubaki: 500 ~ 540 g 460 ~ 520 g ~ 100 g * Wood is a living material, color and weight vary from one weapon to another.
