Camellia Oil - Tsubaki abura
Made in Japan (Isu Islands)
Ingredient: 100% Tsubaki Oil
Size: 70 mL (2,3 oz) / 118 mL (3.9 oz) / 1 L (33.8 oz) / 1.8 L (60.9 oz)
This oil has been produced on the island of Toshima (Isu Shoto), off Tokyo, for more than a century. It is used by many Japanese wood workers as well as specialists in ancient blade (shinken) who are looking for a more stable oil than the Choji oil.
The 70 and 118 mL are conditionned in glass bottles. 1 and 1.8 L are conditionned in metal cans. Cans are not available in stock and require about a week before shipping.
Treatment with Camellia oil is recommended by the craftsmen who make our wooden weapons. The regular oiling is necessary for unvarnished weapons. It is recommended also for the maintenance of Iaito and Shinken.
Utilization on wooden weapons:
Once every 2 months in the wet season, 2 times per month during dry season. For a better preservation of your weapons, it is advisable to carefully rub them with a dry cloth after each use. When you apply the oil, clean the wood surface by rubbing vigorously with a dry cloth, then apply the oil in a thin layer directly with the hand. Allow to dry.
If your weapons are not painted it will not be necessary to sand, but if they are, sanding will help the wood to absorb more oil.
Note that this Camelia oil is initialy intended for skin and hair care. We've selected this oil for it's unmatched quality: 100% pure camelia oil, no additive, cold pressed, cosmetic grade, almost odorless, and halal certified.

Theoretically, a Jo features the correct length for you if it reaches your armpit. More and more practitioners are aware of it and wish to acquire an adapted Jo, cut to length to experience the difference in practice. Especially for children, a Jo that features a standard length might not suit.
This custom made module, featuring lengths that are inferior to the standard Jo length, is recommended for children and practitioners under 155 cm in height.
However, it is important to understand that it is not recommended, (unless instructed otherwise by your teacher) to practice a Kata with your partner using a Jo of a different length. Indeed, a shorter Jo reaches less far, and affects the strength of the lever arm during the technique. The Kata will therefore be modified which is to avoid when learning, at least in the beginning. In most schools the customized Jo is for further, personal research, once the basics are mastered.
The standard thickness is 24 mm (8 bu), other models of a different thickness are mainly designed to work on Tanren (reinforcement), which is very important in some Aikido schools. The 27 mm model is very solid, making it a great Jo to practice heavy contact Kata.
Please note that the thicker a Jo is, the smaller the chance that it bends. A 21 mm diameter Jo might not be perfectly straight.All the classic Jo are adapted to the practice of Aikido but also Jodo, Jojutsu and other Koryu.

Disclaimer
We rigidly sort through all our in stock products, selecting and finally selling only what meets our standards. Of all the wooden weapons we receive, 10 to 15% are eliminated and mostly destroyed. We are proud of the fact that our quality control is the strictest on the market.
However, we cannot offer such a sorting for custom made products and those can therefore show minor flaws like a slight curvature, particularly on the thinnest Jo, of maximally 24 mm, or a finish that shows stains or color variations on the surface, particularly on the thickest Jo. Finally, the diameter of the thickest Jo (33 mm and 36 mm) can vary by 1 mm.
However, in case there is a major defect that we as practitioners ourselves could not accept, we, of course, will replace it, leading to an increased manufacturing time.
Last but not least, we recommend paying attention to very heavy Jo, 30 mm or more. This type of weapon can be dangerous for practitioners who do not master the techniques, by causing shoulder and back pain. -
