From 4 workshops in 2019, the wooden weapon industry in Japan is now reduced to one workshop at full capacity and one workshop with reduced capacity. For this reason, all orders for custom-made items have a production time of about 5 months without guarantees. We will contact you if the order is delayed, but please know that delays are now very common for those orders. Feel free to read our blog article for more information on the situation.Product Information & Size Chart

Classic Shiai Naginata
Made in Japan (Kyushu region)
Available woods: Red Oak or White Oak
Length: 220 cm or 225 cm
Finish: Standard Finish or Seido Special FinishThe shaft (Ebu) is made of a single piece of red or white oak, to which is attached a bamboo blade (Habu). The blade is fixed with white vinyl tape. Leather caps (similar to those used for Kendo Shinai) are fitted at the tip (Kissaki) and butt (Ishizuki).
The Standard Shiai Naginata is made for basic Kata, paired Kata and Shiai. This model is compliant with the All Japan Naginata Regulations for the Shiai, the competitions, and the Engi, the paired Kata. It features a full length of 220 cm or 220 cm, with a 50 cm blade length. The blade and shaft overlap for about 15 cm.
We offer 2 variations of this model. The standard measuring 220 cm, which is the historical standard Shiai Naginata, and the "full length" model, measuring 225 cm which has become more popular over the past few years due to the increasing number of foreign and male practitioners. This full length variation is called "Shinai Naginata for men" in Japan, but because Western women having on average a stronger built than Japanese women, we have not kept this naming.
In compliance with the All Japan Naginata Federation, all Shiai Naginata, no matter the wood or model, weigh over 650 g.
Please note that because the Naginata does not fit into our engraving machine, this model cannot be engraved.
We also offer the Habu (Shinai blade) sold separately for replacement.
- Choice of wood species: red oak or white oak
- Available finish: Standard Finish or Seido Special Finish
- Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki for all models

Finish options:
In 2021, with concerns for the workers, all workshops greatly reduced the number of urethane varnished weapons and replaced the finish by a "Candle Wax". Seido is now transitioning to a new finish offer for the majority of its weapons.
Standard Finish: At Seido, we complete the workshop finish with Camelia oil treatment by default. This is the standard Seido finish.
We do not apply any additional polishing for this finish, so some weapons might have a slightly rough surface.
For maintenance, we recommend that you oil your weapons about once a month with a vegetal based oil.Seido Special Finish: For this special Finish, we first apply a Camelia oil polish (oiling and sanding the weapons with oiled sand paper), then we finish the weapon with high quality beeswax. This finish makes the wood as smooth as it can be and guarantee an excellent protection for several months.
For maintenance, we recommend at least to oil your weapons every month or so. You can also apply wax a few hours after oiling your weapons (if some oil remains on the wood, remove it with a piece of cloth or tissue).Standard Shiai Naginata Specifications Model Standard Full size Full Length 220 cm 225 cm Blade Length 50 cm 50 cm Tsuka Diameter 18 mm x 24 mm 20 mm x 32 mm Weight Red Oak: 650 g ~ 700 g

About Naginata Practice:
Naginata is still practiced is many Koryu, dedicated to Naginata itself, such as Jiki Shinkage Ryu Naginata Jutsu and Tendo Ryu Naginata Jutsu, but also in schools just as part of the curriculum like in Katori Shinto Ryu, Hokushin Itto Ryu or at the Bujinkan (Ninjutsu). The shapes vary greatly from one school to another, but the All Japan Naginata Federation gather some of the schools (mainly Tendo Ryu and Jiki Shinkage Ryu) and organizes events and competitions. Competitions are split in 2 different components, the Shai or competitions, that are practiced with the Naginata presented here, and the Kata which is practiced with a Kata Naginata that we also offer.
