Camellia Oil - Tsubaki abura
Made in Japan (Isu Islands)
Ingredient: 100% Tsubaki Oil
Size: 70 mL (2,3 oz) / 118 mL (3.9 oz) / 1 L (33.8 oz) / 1.8 L (60.9 oz)
This oil has been produced on the island of Toshima (Isu Shoto), off Tokyo, for more than a century. It is used by many Japanese wood workers as well as specialists in ancient blade (shinken) who are looking for a more stable oil than the Choji oil.
The 70 and 118 mL are conditionned in glass bottles. 1 and 1.8 L are conditionned in metal cans. Cans are not available in stock and require about a week before shipping.
Treatment with Camellia oil is recommended by the craftsmen who make our wooden weapons. The regular oiling is necessary for unvarnished weapons. It is recommended also for the maintenance of Iaito and Shinken.
Utilization on wooden weapons:
Once every 2 months in the wet season, 2 times per month during dry season. For a better preservation of your weapons, it is advisable to carefully rub them with a dry cloth after each use. When you apply the oil, clean the wood surface by rubbing vigorously with a dry cloth, then apply the oil in a thin layer directly with the hand. Allow to dry.
If your weapons are not painted it will not be necessary to sand, but if they are, sanding will help the wood to absorb more oil.
Note that this Camelia oil is initialy intended for skin and hair care. We've selected this oil for it's unmatched quality: 100% pure camelia oil, no additive, cold pressed, cosmetic grade, almost odorless, and halal certified.

This round tsuba is the largest of our catalog and the center hole is cut either for Standard/Deluxe Bokken or for the Onoha Itto Ryu Bokken. It can be recut on the inside to be adapted to the Keishi Ryu Bokken, the Iwama Ryu and Takemusu Bokken as well as the Hokushin Itto Ryu or the Jigen Ryu Bokken.

Iwama Takemusu Bokken- Red Oak or White Oak
Made in Japan (Kyushu)
Round Spine | Flat Butt | Squared Kissaki
Red Oak and White Oak available
Seido resumed for you the making of the traditional Iwama Ryu Takemusu Bokken. This Bokken is made from a single piece of oak (red or white) from the southern islands of Kyushu (Japan). Straight cut (blunt) at the Kissaki (tip) and with a Tsuka (handle) that is especially thick for the work of "Tenouchi" (hold), this model is intended for practitioners of Aikido and more particularly to practitioners of the Iwama Ryu style. Slightly curved but the same length as a classic Bokken, solid and heavy, it is particularly suited for the work of strikes and Tanren. This model, although less used, is a replica of the original models made by Iwama’s Saito Sensei.
Very specific, and given its weight, it is also popular among practitioners wishing to use it to practice Suburi.
The Takemusu model is a reproduction of the original model used in Iwama, with a simple finish (rounded tip). However, being made by only one single workshop, at our request, this is a model that is not widespread anymore, including within the Iwama current. Its similarity with the classic model means that it can be used without problem, but note that it will still be 1.5 cm shorter than the model most commonly used.- Choice of wood species: red oak, white oak
- Available finish: urethane varnish or camellia oil polish.
- Manufacturing workshop: Horinouchi or Matsuzaki
We also offer a short version of this model, the Iwama Takemusu Shoto.
Differences with the model Iwama Ryu Classic:
The Iwama Ryu Classic model, which is much more prevalent these days, is also available on our site.
- Length 101.5 cm (instead of 103 cm for the classic model)
- Thicker (2 mm more than the classic model)
- A little heavier
- Round spine (the classical model is flat, "Hiramine")Non varnished - Oil polish option:
All our high-end weapons are available either varnished with urethane or polished with camellia oil. The latter is more pleasant to the touch and those
unvarnished weapons are more ecologically-friendly, but they require regular (monthly) maintenance with oil (camellia or wood maintenance oil). Further, they can only be made from the finest woods of Japanese quality. Given the need for maintenance of these weapons, our stocks are limited. Also, since the craftsmen must select the best wood possible to manufacture these Aikido Bokken and Jo, the processing time is longer than for varnished weapons. Please note that the oil finish process can darken the wood significantly.Iwama Takemusu Bokken Specifications Wood Akagashi

About the Iwama Ryu style:
"Iwama Ryu", sometimes also called "Takemusu Aiki", is a current of Aikido initiated by Morihiro Saito Sensei, a close disciple of the founder of Aikido, reputed to have codified accurately and efficiently the practice Aikido weapons: Aikiken and Aikido. This style focuses as much on the practice with than without weapons. In fact, the practice with a Bokken that matches the standards of the school is particularly important. The practice of Aikiken Iwama Ryu, besides its extreme precision, develops power input (Tenouchi), due to the rthickness of the Bokken and striking power.
