Hakama Alteration - Koshiita height adjustment

  • The Koshiita should sit on top of the belt. (Seido Hakama are fitted to be worn with a common Judo type belt.)
  • High Koshiita (Iaido style): The Koshiita is higher than the front strap, to be worn with a Kakuobi/large Iai type belt.
  • Low Koshiita: The base of the Koshiita is about 2 cm lower than the front strap. This allows to fold the front belt into the "Judo type belt" without getting a crumpled Hakama when tied.
  • Adjusting the height of the Koshiita according to your belt/style of wearing, helps that the pleats fall nicely and flat.

Roughly translated as "where there is a will, there is a way", this well known proverb "Seishin Itto Nanigoto Ka Narazaran" means more precisely "when the mind is concentrated, nothing is impossible".

Dogi & Hakama Sashiko Bag

Made in Japan

Material: 100% Unbleached Sashiko Cotton

Dimensions: 43 cm x 55 cm (rope length is about 195 cm in total).

Embroidery color: 18 colors to chose from (the same color applies for both the kanji main design and the name option).

Name option: Name embroidery at the bottom of the bag (see product pictures)

This cotton bag can fit a dogi, hakama, belt and towel. The ropes and port on the back are thick and comfortable. For optimal quality, Seido logo, Aikido calligraphy, "Ki" calligraphy and all other designs are not printed but embroidered. Made 100% from japanese made unbleached sashiko cotton, this product is eco friendly.

Here are all the designs we offer and their meaning:

  • The Seido embroidery is based on the Seido label attached to all Seido equipments.
  • The Aikido embroidery is based on a calligraphy found in the main dojo of Aikikai Hombu Dojo. It was created by Morihei Ueshiba O-Sensei when he was 80 years old, a period in his life when his calligraphy reached its peak. Note that the depth and extension of ideograms are a sign of an open mind.
  • The "Ki' embroidery is based on the same calligraphy as the "Aikido embroidery" but only contains the second kanji "Ki".
  • Judo - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Karatedo - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Kendo - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Iaido - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Zanshin - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : Remaining mind, or lingering mind.
  • Mushin - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : No mind (mental state), or mind without mind.
  • Heijoshin - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : Calm, imperturbable, relaxed heart/mind
  • Shingitai - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : The unification of mind, skills and body.
  • Takemusu Aiki - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : Aikido concept, the unity of martial techniques through the concept of Aiki.

Option "Name Embroidery":

Optionally, you can add your name as embroidery. It will be embroidered on the left of the bottom part (same high as the Seido label), with a font size of 2 cm by 2 cm.
Please note that due to our technical settings and to improve the overall balance, it is only possible to embroider either a first name, a last name or a word (1 word).

  • #10000 Cotton Bushu Aizome Aikido Hakama - Super-Heavy Weight

Made in Japan | Indigo-dyed (Aizome)

    Material: 100% cotton #10000

    Shrinkage: ~2%  |  Weight (size 26): 1.35 kg

Shape: Traditional Aikido cut (flexible koshiita, 7 lines of stitches on straps)

This model is the best of the natural indigo-dyed Hakama. This hakama is heavy, difficult to maintain, but very traditional, extremely durable, and therefore very popular among the more conservative Japanese teachers.
The fabric used for this model comes from one of the largest traditional indigo dyers of Japan located in the Saitama prefecture (north of Tokyo).

#10000 corresponds to the yarn density and therefore, a higher number does not imply an increase in quality. Indeed, a cotton #20000, for example, would be too rigid for the practice of martial arts. The #10000 is the maximum possible density to maintain good strength while providing a soft cloth. Aizome, the traditional indigo dye, has many advantages, it repels insects, promotes healing, and accelerates the drying of the fabric. These are the reasons why it has been used in the manufacturing of martial art equipments since the times of the samurai.

The "Bushu" process of dying is more recent however, dating back a hundred years. It corresponds to the traditional use of indigo to dye the cotton threads before weaving. This guarantees a better outfit and uniform dyeing. Our "Bushu" Indigo-dyed cotton Hakama are all designed according to this principle, which is the best of the best in traditional Japanese dyeing.

This model is recommended to practitioners who have substantial experience in wearing Hakama, and to those looking for a traditional and very heavy garment but are not afraid of the difficult maintenance of this type of fabric. Although Indigo rubs off very easily on the white fabric of your keikogi or that of your partner, it also washes off easily, even by hand washing.

For maximum comfort, the strap length is adjusted according to the size of the hakama.
However, please note that the shrinkage will make each side shrink by about 5 cm, so please make sure you have enough length fit your waist/hips size.

As all our Hakama, this model is fully made in Japan (fabric, cut, and stitching).

Option - Sewing of the inner pleats

Cotton Hakama models are particularly difficult to maintain and fold, we therefore propose to sew the inner pleats. Although the "wrinkled" aspect of Aizome Hakama is a desirable feature for most practitioners who usually choose this model, you might opt for the option of sewing the pleats in order to preserve and identify them more easily during folding after class or during washing. The pleats are sewn on the inside, which makes them completely invisible when worn. The result however is that the pleats are better kept, and the "puffed out" aspect the hakama will be reduced.

    Before first use:

To better set the dye, we recommend to soak your Hakama in salt water and/or vinegar overnight, and repeat this process at least twice.More information can be found on the "How to Take Care of your Hakama" page, or check out our blog post on the traditional "Japanese Indigo on Martial Arts Equipment". Please note that what ever you do, this Hakama will always rub off, this is what Aizome is.
